Challenged to create a piece within a trimmed hoop these were our results

A couple of small brooches inspired by the designs of Nancy Nicholson from Modern Folk Embroidery.

Brooches a project from Modern Folk Embroidery by Nancy Nicholson. Made by Hazel.

A fun piece from Anna who explains that this is a cross-stitch that came from an Etsy pattern by ‘SoEasyPattern’. “I just used some Aida and thread that I had at home. The pattern did suggest colours and most I did have but there were some substitutions. The original pattern said ‘coke’ and I replaced this with ‘cocaine’; it’s now having in my hall outside the bathroom.”

Slow Stitching from Frances.

At recent meetings we have seen Frances working on charming little pieces; here it is all put together into either lap quilts or wall hangings. The close up images show the varied and innovative stitching and textures that Frances has used.

Frances says “They are something I’ve been doing for a long time and which you will probably recognise. They started off as a big bag inspired by a course with India Flint and you’ve seen that photo, but I decided that the bag was too big to be useful and I deconstructed it . Then, inspired by Shelley Rhodes in a book called ‘Fragmentation and Repair’ I followed her ideas in a section she calls “not quite kantha” and I used various scraps and leftovers to make a series of small rectangular pieces which I have applied to what were the sides of the bag and which now are a couple of hangings or two lap quilts!”

Jacquie’s Quilt.
Jacquie explained these are 6″ star blocks from a design by Lynne Edwards. Quilted using decorative machine stitch and a walking foot. “I have previously used this technique but was reminded of it in a recent talk by Judi Kirk.”
