This varied and colourful display was on show at SOAS in London.
Much of this was from the private collection of Karun Thakar with supplementary pieces from the V&A Museum.
These garments represented the many tribal peoples from this region, their diversity, skills and love of embroidered decoration. Their vibrant and distinctive textile traditions showcase the identities of these cultures.
Close inspection revealed the tiny stitches worked in silk or wool using chain stitch, cross stitch or ladder stitch mostly worked by women and girls.
Embroidery was not confined to clothes alone. Many functional items such as bags, cushion covers , rifle cases and even bicycle seats were decorated with elaborate stitching
